Medicare Advantage plans (also called Part C) are offered by private insurers approved by Medicare. They cover everything Original Medicare covers — and most add valuable extras like dental, vision, hearing, and prescription drugs.
Key Benefits
- $0 or low monthly premiums on many plans
- Annual out-of-pocket maximum protects you from catastrophic costs
- Dental, vision, and hearing benefits often included
- Prescription drug coverage (Part D) bundled into most plans
- Extra benefits: OTC cards, transportation, fitness programs, meal delivery
Who Qualifies?
You must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B and live in the plan's service area. Most people who are 65 or older (or under 65 with qualifying disabilities) are eligible.
Plan Types
- HMO — Use in-network providers; requires referrals for specialists
- PPO — Can see out-of-network providers at higher cost; no referrals needed
- PFFS — Plan determines what it will pay; any provider who accepts terms can be used
- SNP — Special Needs Plans for people with specific conditions or dual eligibility
